What Type of Wedding Film is Right for You?

So you’re thinking about having a wedding videographer create a beautiful film for you. I’m so excited for you you’re going to love your film. With that being said did you know that there are several different types of wedding films. While looking for a wedding videographer it’s very important that you know what type of film you want because every videographer has a specific style and may or may not be a good fit for you!

So with that being said, let’s take a look at the 4 most common types of wedding films!

Traditional Film

Lets start with the traditional type of wedding film. Traditional wedding films are usually longer (15+ minutes) and cover all the major moments of the day in a raw and simple way. This usually means recording the entire ceremony, speeches, first dances, etc. and editing them in their entirety. While they show all the raw moments of a wedding day, they are usually not as cinematic and engaging as other types of wedding films. This can be a great option for couples who just want to see all the important moments from their day again and aren’t too concerned with the visual style of their film

Cinematic film

Cinematic films are kind of like movie trailers, but movie trailers that spoil the whole film (which is good in this case). You can expect to see beautiful cinematic shots of all the moments of your day, not always in chronological order. Snippets of the vows or toasts may play while shots of the ceremony play over them. Dramatic music and smooth transitions, a cinematic film will make you feel like a movie star.

documentary film

Think of a reality TV show when you think of a documentary wedding film. A documentary film will likely follow your day chronologically and show a series of raw and candid moments, with soundbytes of couples getting ready talking with their friends, or snippets of toasts. Visually they are similar to traditional films in that they focus more on raw authenticity rather than cinematic shots.

storytelling film

If you’re wanting to have your heart strings pulled, a storytelling film might be for you. There’s so many different types of storytelling films out there but the main focus of these films is to tell a story through both the visuals and audio. That means beautiful shots paired with audio snippets that leads to a climax of the film. A great storytelling film does all of this while making you feel the emotions of the day, the excitement, the love, the happiness.

While these are the 4 main types of wedding films that are most common, there are many different variations of each of these and many videographers, including myself, may take elements from different ones to create a unique wedding film. When picking what style of wedding film you want I would suggest thinking about what type of film would make you want to watch over and over again, and of course work closely with your videographer on making sure that you get the style of film that you’re looking for.
